The light could be dimmer, but it would have a totally different effect.
There's also the problematic point of computer screens vs. physical art. The light certainly wouldn't be overbearing if it wasn't on a screen, and it does look so much better when looking at the full size view rather than the thumbnail or smaller view ...

Wow, that must be the most in-depth thing I've ever said about a piece of visual art
